Choosing the Lock System for Your New Gun Room Door:
For your new gun room door, you can choose from the following options, which we will now present with their advantages and disadvantages:
Double-bit Lock
As a basic version, all our doors are supplied with a high-security double-bit lock with two keys.
Advantages:
- inexpensive.
- easiest handling.
- additional emergency opening from the inside as a key-alike double-bit lock (override function) available at an extra charge.
Disadvantages:
- Keys can break.
- Keys can be lost.
- Opening only possible from the outside.
- Where do I safely store the key and the spare key?
- Hidden keys can be found and used by unauthorized persons.
Many licensing authorities and offices, as well as insurance companies, strongly recommend the use of intellectual locks, i.e. combination locks, due to the last two points, as this eliminates the potential finding and unauthorized use of a physical object as an easy access option.
All orders placed without selecting one of the optionally described and linked lock systems below will be delivered in the standard "double-bit lock" version.
Electronic Combination Lock
An electronic combination lock is an optional lock system available at an extra charge, which is installed at the factory instead of the double-bit lock.
Preset to a factory combination, an electronic combination lock offers the user the possibility to easily program their own six-digit number codes. Thus, an obligatory main code for daily use and always an optional sub-code can be created, which can be deposited, for example, with a will, so that you also have access to it during your lifetime, but in the event of death, relatives can also be informed about the location of a code that opens the safe door. This way, you can inform relatives, but only after the will has been opened will heirs gain knowledge of an opening code. For both codes, there is a choice of one million genuine code variants; only the main code and the sub-code must, of course, be different.
The following variants of the electronic combination lock are possible:
- Operation from the room side by means of a second input unit connected there and a handle to open the locking mechanism (so you can lock yourself in the gun room or use it as a panic room).
- Emergency opening option both from the outside and from the inside by means of a double-bit lock as an override function (at an extra charge). Also note the advantages and disadvantages of double-bit locks.
- Multi-user locks, where several code options exist for further users (on request)
Advantages:
- no physical locking secret (key) available (exception: with emergency opening option).
- Each code can be freely chosen, with one million code possibilities each.
- no follow-up costs for key duplication.
- easiest programming.
- easiest handling in everyday use.
- higher-quality lock system due to more demanding certification guidelines.
- Secure application for a testamentary code / survivor regulation.
- meaningful extensions optionally available, please contact us if required.
- When using the option of operation from outside and inside, bilateral operation of the lock is guaranteed.
Disadvantages:
- Follow-up costs due to battery replacement (as needed, approx. once a year).
- Input units are subject to mechanical stress.
Emergency Opening:
For emergency openings, we distinguish two systems, both of which are operated by a double-bit key lock:
- Emergency opening from outside
- Emergency opening from inside
Customers who opt for an emergency opening from outside do so because they fear a failure of a lock unit. This therefore only applies to the electronic lock variant. The argument is obvious: with the key, the door can be opened without much fuss to eliminate a malfunction. The disadvantage is that the emergency opening key must be stored in another valuable container with at least the same security class. This option can be added to any electronic lock system.
Customers who opt for an emergency opening from inside do so because they want to free themselves from a situation of personal entrapment in the room in the easiest possible way. This is possible with both external lock types: double-bit key lock and electronic lock. When using an electronic lock, you can choose between the electronic variant with a keypad on the inside of the door or the simple variant with the double-bit key lock. When combining a double-bit key lock on the outside and inside, it should be noted that the locks of both locks are then identical; here, before entering the room, the key is removed from the outside and taken into the interior and inserted into the emergency opening lock there. This option can be added to both electronic and double-bit locking systems.
