8 Selection of the locking system
8 - Selecting the lock system for your new gun room door
For your new gun room door, you can choose from several options, which we would like to present to you below with their advantages and disadvantages:
Double bit lock
As a basic version, we supply all doors with a high-security double-bit lock with two keys.
Advantages:
- inexpensive.
- easiest handling.
Disadvantages:
- Keys can break off.
- Keys can get lost.
- Opening only possible from the outside.
- Where do I keep the key and the spare key safe?
- Hidden keys can be found and used by unauthorized persons.
Due to the last two points, many licensing authorities and offices as well as insurance companies strongly recommend the use of mental locks, i.e. combination locks, as this eliminates the potential discovery and unauthorized use of a physical object as an easy means of access.
All orders placed without selecting one of the optional locking systems described below and linked below will be delivered in the standard "double-bit lock" version.
Mechanical combination lock
A mechanical combination lock is an optional locking system available at an additional cost, which is installed at the factory instead of the double-bit lock.
Preset to a factory default combination, a mechanical combination lock allows the user to select and program a single, custom code consisting of three two-digit numbers. Theoretically, this creates 1 million possible code variations; however, restrictions and special features reduce this number to approximately 480,000 code variations in practice.
Advantages:
- no physical locking secret (key) is available.
- Code can be freely chosen according to specifications, theoretically 1 million possibilities
- No follow-up costs for key duplication or battery replacement.
- High reliability thanks to exclusively mechanical components.
Disadvantages:
- quite complicated reprogramming process.
- quite complex everyday operation.
- Number wheel with fine markings is sometimes difficult to read.
- Code must be set very carefully without large tolerances.
- limited code variants, in practice about 460,000 possible variants.
- Opening only possible from the outside.
- Not suitable for use with 10mm flat floor profiles.
Electronic combination lock
An electronic combination lock is an optional locking system available at an additional cost, which is installed at the factory instead of the double-bit lock.
Preset to a factory combination, an electronic combination lock offers the user the ability to easily program their own six-digit codes. This allows them to create a mandatory main code for daily use and an optional sub-code, which can be included, for example, in a will, allowing the user to access it during their lifetime. In the event of a death, relatives can also be informed of the location of a code that opens the safe door. This way, relatives are informed but only receive the opening code after the will has been opened. For both codes, there are a million real code variations to choose from; only the main code and sub-code must, of course, be different.
The following variants of the electronic combination lock are possible:
- Can be operated from the side of the room using a second input unit connected there and a handle to open the lock (so you can lock yourself in the weapons room or use it as a panic room).
- Emergency opening option from the outside using a double-bit lock as an override function (available upon request). Please also note the advantages and disadvantages of double-bit locks.
- Multi-user locks with multiple code options for additional users (on request)
Advantages:
- no physical locking secret (key) available (exception: with emergency opening option).
- Each code can be freely chosen, with one million possible codes.
- no follow-up costs for key duplication.
- simplest programming.
- easy handling in everyday use.
- higher-quality locking system through more demanding certification guidelines.
- Secure application for a will code / survivorship arrangement.
- Useful extensions are optionally available; please contact us if required.
- When using the option of operation from outside and inside, operation of the lock from both sides is guaranteed.
Disadvantages:
- Follow-up costs due to battery replacement (as needed, approx. once a year).
- Input units are subject to mechanical stress.
